Our Own Practice — This Website

The Idea. Every other case on this site describes work we did for someone else. This one is about the site itself. Shabel Enterprises builds governed, standards-driven, privacy-respecting data foundations for its clients; when it came time to build our own web platform, we held it to that standard rather than a quieter one. The unglamorous disciplines we ask clients to invest in — governance, documented standards, privacy by design, automated and auditable delivery — are the same ones we used to build the very page you are reading. Call it eating our own cooking — a working answer to a fair question: does the practice actually run the way it tells everyone else to?

What We Set Out to Prove. A consultancy that sells discipline should be able to point at something it runs under that discipline itself. Marketing copy is easy; a system that embodies the claims is not. So the goal was never a flashy site — it was a modest, correct one, built and operated the way we would want a client's platform built: privacy-respecting by default, governed by design, and delivered through a pipeline that leaves an audit trail instead of a trail of manual steps. The rule was simple. If we would not ship it to a client, we did not want it representing us on our own turf.

What We Built. A modern, governed web platform. Content is authored in a modern headless CMS and published through an automated CI/CD delivery pipeline, with the hosting environment defined as infrastructure-as-code — so the whole site can be rebuilt from source rather than remembered. Analytics are privacy-first and cookieless: we measure what helps us improve the site without tracking the people reading it, and without a consent gauntlet. Credentials are brokered through secretless secrets management, so nothing sensitive lives in the code or the repository. AI-assisted authoring and delivery help move the work along — but every change passes a human-reviewed governance gate before it goes live. Nothing ships that a person has not read, reviewed, and approved.

How We Built It Right.

• Governance by design. Content and configuration are versioned, reviewed, and traceable. Every published change has an owner and a record — the same "who changed what, when, and who approved it" we insist on for client data.
• Standards-driven engineering. One documented way to do each thing — how content is structured, how the site is built, how it is deployed — so the platform is repeatable to run and simple to hand off, not a set of habits living in one person's head.
• Privacy by design. Cookieless, privacy-first analytics and a data-minimal contact path. We collect the least we can, keep it briefly, and say plainly what we keep — privacy treated as the default, not an afterthought bolted on at the end.
• CI/CD discipline. Automated, auditable delivery from a single source of truth, with the environment defined as infrastructure-as-code so it can be stood up predictably and rolled back cleanly when a change is wrong.
• Secretless by default. Credentials are brokered through managed, secretless secrets management and are never checked into source — the boring habit that prevents the loud incident.
• AI under human review. AI-assisted authoring and delivery, kept high-value and low-risk by a human-reviewed governance gate on every change. The machine accelerates the work; a person still owns the decision.

My Role. For this build, Jeff Shabel was principal and sole architect and builder of the platform — designing the governance model, writing the standards, and standing up the delivery pipeline, end to end. It is the same senior-by-design accountability the practice brings to client engagements, here applied start to finish to its own house.

Why It Matters. The result is not a metric — it is a posture. Because the platform is governed and defined in code, we can change it with confidence and undo a change that turns out wrong. Because analytics are cookieless, visitors get their privacy without being asked to trade it for a page view. Because delivery is automated and reviewed, "we think it's fine" is replaced by "we can show exactly what changed and who signed off." Those are the same properties we build into client systems, and running them on our own platform keeps us honest about what they cost and what they are worth — we would rather undersell a working discipline than oversell a screenshot.

What It Demonstrates. Building — not merely recommending — a governed, standards-driven, privacy-by-design platform, delivered through disciplined, auditable, AI-assisted CI/CD under human review. It is the tagline made literal: state of the art in the methods, old-fashioned flair in the craftsmanship. The practice eats its own cooking. The standards it has held enterprise data work to for over a quarter century are the standards this website is built and run on.
